So, when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus had been severely beaten, flogged and crucified. He had been hanging on the cross for several hours while spikes through his hands and feet flooded his body with excruciating pain. Normally, it would take many hours, even days, for a victim of crucifixion to die. Yet Jesus was approaching the end. In all probability, he had lost a great deal of blood due to his injuries. Finally, he cries in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” which is Aramaic for “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” a fulfilment of Messianic prophecy. And then, after taking a sip of wine vinegar, he calls out, “It… is… finished!” Bowing his head, Jesus, the Christ, dies.

The wages of sin is death and all have sinned and missed the perfect goodness of God Almighty. Yet, Jesus, the Son of God was born free of sin because he had no earthly father. We read that he was tempted, as we are, yet never succumbed. However, God, his Father, chose to impute the righteous Christ with our sin so that, in him, we might be imputed with God’s righteousness. The wages of sin is death so Jesus died. Yet, because he was guiltless death had no legal right to hold onto him. And so, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ rose from the dead, thus opening the way for you and me to be acquitted from the wages of sin. That’s the grace of God. We are saved through faith in his grace.

Indeed, it is finished. God made him who had no sin to be a sin offering for you and me so that, in  him, we might receive the righteousness of God. He has done it all. Nothing more can be added to that act of grace. There is nothing you or I could ever do to make us right before God except to admit that there is nothing you or I could ever do to make us right before God. And that’s faith, confidence in the complete work of Christ on the cross.

Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

“I just would not let go,” said a husband whose wife had fallen into adultery. I was watching a video of a young man called, Mike who was sharing the story of how his wife, Sharon had become involved with a work colleague. Mike and Sharon were both committed Christians. Mike was an elder in their church and his wife sang in the worship team. I was filled with compassion and admiration as he went on to explain how the affair had endured 6 months before, realising her folly, Sharon ended the affair. She repented before God and her husband. Broken and distraught, Mike went before the Lord. He loved his wife and was not prepared to give up the fight. Yet, he was filled with intense anger. The marriage was in shreds.

Reading the words of Jesus, Mike discovered that divorce was not God’s plan. God planned for a man and a woman to leave their parents and be united in flesh and heart. But Jesus said, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives.” Mike paused at these words. Was he hardening his heart? He had never stopped loving Sharon. Only disappointment and pride would prompt him to leave his repentant wife. Though she had committed sexual immorality, she had confessed and repented of her sin. “I could not let her go. I would not give up!” he said. “So, I chose to soften my heart and repent of my own sin of pride. I forgave Sharon and together we turned our eyes to Jesus. We sought his love for one another and firmly recommitted our marriage to the Lord. By his grace our marriage survived and is stronger now than it’s ever been. I love my wife more than anything in this world.”

A hardened heart is the hardest substance known to man. Only God’s Word can penetrate that wall; only the hammer of the Word of God can soften a hardened heart. Get into God’s Word and get God’s Word into you.

God-tracking is holding on with a softened heart.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

I choose to repent of my pride and soften my heart. I fix my eyes on Jesus.

“Father, I’m sorry for hardening my heart. I realise that a hardened heat causes great discord and disaster. Because of hardened hearts wars have been fought and lives have been lost. Dear Lord, I commit my marriage to you, afresh. Forgive me for my part in all the conflict. I choose to love my wife/husband despite the hurts and disappointments. I choose to repent of my pride and soften my heart. I fix my eyes on Jesus and acknowledge you in every aspect of my relationship. For your glory, Lord. Amen.”

GOD-TRACKING IS DISCOVERING GOD’S PURPOSES TO MAKE YOU AN AMBASSADOR OF RECONCILIATION

2 Corinthians 5:18
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

Author and Bible teacher, Rick Warren said, “The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfilment, your peace of mind or even your happiness. It’s far greater than your family, your career or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose.” God’s Word says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” It also says, “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” And this is exactly what God-tracking is all about.

I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour at the age of 9. My brother, who is 6 years older than me, took me to a church that was aptly named, The Miracle Centre. Here I witnessed many miracles of God from legs growing to testimonies of the healing of cancer. The best miracles of all, however, were the many people who discovered the grace of God through the work of Jesus. It was here that I heard that the story of Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of the world was more than a Children’s Bible story – it was true fact! There is a real man called, Jesus who is sinless in every way, and he yet took the consequences of my sin upon himself when he died; for the wages of sin is death. But this Jesus (who is the Son of God) did not stay dead, he rose again. Because Jesus isn’t guilty of sin meant, death could not keep him down! It was at The Miracle Centre that I learned how God reconciled me to himself through the greatest miracle of all – the resurrection of Jesus! And he did it for me.

From that age till now I have been discovering that Jesus did indeed die and rise again to set me free from sin, but this fact has a purpose for me on earth. I’ve discovered the reason God has reconciled me to himself through Christ is for me to walk with him by faith, discovering his plans and purposes for my life. As the Scripture says, “He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who, for their sake, died and was raised.” You see, God reconciled us to himself through Christ so that we might all have the ministry of reconciliation. What purpose!

This ministry can take on many shapes from preaching the gospel to thousands, to sharing the love of Jesus with one close friend. It is God’s will for us to discover his plans for us so that we may fit that purpose. To discover God’s plans and purposes I encourage you to seek first his Kingdom and goodness. Tracking God’s will for you involves acknowledge him in all your ways: your relationships, your family, your career and your wildest dreams and ambitions. Then walk in God’s will by faith, trusting him with all your heart and not leaning on your own understanding. Indeed, discovering your real purpose in life begins with God.

I receive the ministry you have given me (as you have every believer) to be a reconciler – sharing the Good News of Jesus with those around me. Help me to make the most of every opportunity and to walk exclusively according to you plans for my life. Today, O Lord, I confess that my purpose in life begins with God. Amen."
