GOD-TRACKING IS TUNING INTO GOD’S CLEAR SIGNAL

Colossians 3:2

I grew up in the 1970s when computers were great big monsters that filled a room the size of a bus depot. The World Wide Web was a fuzzy construction built by the resident spider in the corner of the room, behind one of the one-ton printers. Online radio was non-existent. The only way one could ever listen to foreign radio was via shortwave. And I loved my shortwave radio receiver. I’d erect high wooden poles to run a wire up to receive a better signal. Little did I know that 20 years later I’d enjoy the privilege of broadcasting on shortwave radio.

Swizz, beep-beep, boing, shhhh would come the sound from the small speaker of my little SW receiver. Turning the knob, I’d listen carefully until I found the reasonable signal of a station like, Trans World Radio. Then, for seemingly no reason, the voice would become garbled and snarled by electromagnetic interference. I’d twiddle that dial and waggle the aerial until the signal eventually returned and I was able to continue listing to TWR.

God’s Word tells us to be holy as God is holy. With regard to the patterns of this world, Christians are exhorted to be separate. In other words, as followers of Christ, we are called to live lives free of the interference of the world. By no means are we told to despise or reject the people of the world (for God loved the world so much that he sent Jesus to die for it) but we are told to tune into God’s voice and separate ourselves from the corruption of sin. You see, sin has a way of creeping in under the radar. Just like when I listened to shortwave radio stations, electromagnetic interference would corrupt the radio station signal I was tuned to, so that I could not hear what was being said, so sin interferes with our sensitivity to the voice of God’s Holy Spirit. May we learn to twiddle those spiritual dials and raise those spiritual antennae higher to cut out the noise of the WORLD to receive a clearer signal from the WORD.

God-tracking is tuning into God’s clear signal.

“Oh Lord, I’m sorry for allowing the interference of the world to creep into my spiritual walk. I confess and repent of all I’ve allowed into my life that may have corrupted my experience of you; every deed, every thought and every word that has grieved you Holy Spirit. Forgive me, Lord. I choose now to raise my spiritual aerial and finetune ears into your still small voice. I change channels to fix my thoughts on things above and not earthly things. Help me to seek you in prayer and the reading of your Word. I open my heart and open my ears to hear your still voice more clearly. Amen.”

Gideon lived at a time in history when God’s people, Israel had rebelled against God and were worshipping false idols. Sadly, as God had warned them through Moses, if Israel rejected God’s Word and turned to foreign gods, God would abandon them to their enemies. This was the case in Gideon’s day. The Midianites were suppressing Israel, raiding their crops and stealing their livestock. Therefore, Gideon was hiding in a wine-press while he was threshing his wheat, when the angel of God appeared to him.

“The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valour,” said the angel. “Who? Me?” replied Gideon. Gideon was not a significant figure. He was the least in his family, which was of the smallest tribe of Israel. Other Israelites may have tried to stand up against the Midianites, but not Gideon. He was hiding in a winepress. A failure. Useless, in his own eyes. But now, God was calling him to turn the hearts of his people back to worshipping him, and then to go on to defeat the Midianites. Thankfully, young Gideon obeyed God and, with only 300 out 22,000 fighting men, he conquered their enemy.
Are you facing a mammoth task today? Perhaps, like Gideon, you feel you’re an insignificant failure.

Maybe you feel you don’t have what it takes to conquer your fears or succeed in your calling. Gideon felt the same. Let me say to you, you are fearfully and wonderfully made by God; and God makes no mistakes. He has a plan and he has a purpose for you. Trust his design for your life and trust his grace to empower you to fulfil his design (remember, grace is God’s doing). Nothing can separate you from the hand of God and if God is with you, none can stand against you. Be encouraged, the LORD is with you, O mighty GodTracker of valour!

“O Lord God, when I read the story of Gideon I feel so encouraged. If you could raise up a little man like Gideon and turn him into a victorious warrior, then I know you can use me to do what you have called me to do. It’s not by my power or might, but by your Spirit I will achieve this task. I commit my work to you and trust you to fulfil my ambitions. GOD-TRACKING IS REJOICING IN THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE

Psalm 118:24
This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

We’ve all had experiences when something good has happened and we say, “That made my day.” I remember late one Friday evening, many years back, my wife, Karen open our freezer to realise that we had meat left for only two days. This was during the days when I was studying for the ministry and we lived by faith. It was my first year of studies and I’d left a lucrative job to attend Bible college. The little income we had between us from part-time work barely covered the essentials. “What are we going to do for meat?” Karen said. We prayed and went to bed.

Early Saturday morning there was a knock on our door. We were still in bed, so I hastily pulled on a pair of jeans and answered the door. “Come with me,” said my father-in-law who stood at the door. Squinting in the morning sunlight, I followed him to his car. Dad opened the car’s boot. My eyes fell on a whole hind-quarter of fresh meat. My dad-in-law had no idea we had need of food and just felt prompted by the Spirit to buy us a hind-quarter. That made my day!

Today is your day! Remember, as the old song goes, every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before. Traditionally, we aside set only one day a week to gather to worship God. But the Christian lifestyle comprises more than just Sunday morning kisses. As author, Bob Gass puts is, “The secret of victorious Christian living is not ‘dipping’ in God’s presence once a week in church, but ‘dwelling’ in it every day.”

I know we all have good days and bad days. I dare say, Jesus had a few bad days, notwithstanding, Good Friday. For the best part of 3 years Jesus preached the gospel of the Kingdom of God, healed the sick and loved those to whom he was sent. Then, the very evening before the day he was crucified, Jesus ate the celebratory Passover meal with his friends. At the end of the meal, as was the custom, they sang one of the Hallel Psalms (Psalms 113 to 118). Tradition has it, he sang Psalm 118. This Psalm is a prophetic Psalm about the coming of Messiah. Jesus knew this, of course. Jesus knew too, that he would be arrested, tried and crucified the very next day. Yet is sang, “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Whatever your day holds; whatever happens tomorrow, good or bad, remember the Lord is there already. He is meeting your needs and preparing your way. As Jesus faced the day of his cross he sang the words, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Because of the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and knew that he would go on to be seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Today is the day the Lord has made, so fix your eyes on Jesus and rejoice. This is your day!

God-tracking is rejoicing in the day that the Lord has made.

Every day with Jesus
Is sweeter than the day before
Every day with Jesus
I love Him more and more

Somehow, those simple old choruses always seem to make it so easy to understand the purposes of God. For every true GodTracker, every day is a new chance to discover the plans God has for us, in Jesus. Every day is simply a new day to celebrate the goodness of the Lord.
Once every 365 days, we set aside only one day to commemorate the start of new things. New Year’s Day has become synonymous with new beginnings, new resolutions and new hopes and dreams. Truth be told, it’s just another day. Yet, we humans have a propensity to seek any excuse to try to start anew. Therefore, we grab hold of this one day in the year to let bygones be bygones and old acquaintances be forgotten. What space does that leave in our lives to seize new opportunities when they arrive?

God’s Word instructs us to run with endurance the race marked out for us. No athlete makes a good start and then sits down on the track. New beginnings need enduring persistence to fulfil their purpose. Every step we take on this track called life is a new day to make the best use of our time, as children of the Light, and to share the love of God in these evil times. Every day is a new opportunity to seek and track God’s plans and purposes for our lives. As we commit our work to God and acknowledge him in all our ways, every new morning is a new opportunity to seize the day.

So, why don’t you wake up every new day singing, every day with Jesus Is sweeter than the day before.

God-tracking is fresh every day.

I have a pear tree in my back yard that produces the most succulent large pear. Early spring, it bursts in to vibrant blossom. Leaves then appear and soon I notice small green fruit beginning to form. I wait and watch with anticipation for the tiny pears to grow and grow until finally, they become ripe and ready to be plucked. However, I prefer to wait further until the fruit to falls from the tree, in fear of picking it before it’s fully ripe. Yet, I never know the exact moment each pear will fall. Each fruit becomes ready in season but only falls to the ground when its time has come.

Approximately 2017 years ago a young Nazarene girl called, Mary fell pregnant outside of wedlock. The Holy Spirit had come upon her and she had miraculously conceived a baby boy. By God’s grace, Joseph, her betrothed, remained by her side. For almost nine months she and Joseph watched and waited for the birth of the son they were to call, Jesus. But then the unexpected happened, Caesar Augustus called for a censes to be taken of the Roman Empire. Everyone needed to return to his town of origin to be registered. Joseph, a descendent of king David, was born in Bethlehem so he and his very pregnant wife embarked on the long journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. By the time they arrived, her time had come. Neither parent knew the moment of birth; neither could precisely plan for it, only God knew the exact moment Jesus would be born. Yet, God timed it perfectly so that Jesus would be born in the town of Bethlehem as foretold by the prophet Micah. The season was right but only God knew when Jesus’ time had come.

Just as God the Father orchestrated the circumstances that brought Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem at the right season for the birth of Messiah, so God will arrange the circumstances of your seasons for the birth of his designs in your life. Just as I choose to watch and wait for the fruit to fall from my pear tree rather than plucking it before it’s ripe, be encouraged to watch and wait for God’s purposes to come to fruition in his time, rather than jumping the gun to pick the fruit before it’s ripe. God’s plan for you will mature in season but will only fall to the ground when its time has come.

God-tracking is waiting and watching for God’s purpose to ripen in his time

Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us

I’m told that the Greeks had a race in the early Olympic games that was unique to all the others. The winner of the race was not the runner who finished first. The winner was the runner who finished his race with his torch still lit. Paul the apostle, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit said, “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we, an imperishable.”

One of my favourite English words is the word tenacity. Tenacity is defined as the quality or fact of being very determined; determination to grip something firmly. I could imagine those runners in the early Greek Olympics running as fast as they could, while gripping their Olympic torches firmly, with determination to win in such a way as to keep their flames burning.

God-tracking implies tracking the plans of God for our lives. This process requires us to remain on track with God’s purposes. If one of these athletes, running a track race, veered off track while he was running, he might stumble and fall in the rough, extinguish his torch. Christian, you and I are called to be the light of the world. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” To keep that torch burning is to stay on track with God’s plans by acknowledge him in all your ways while seeking first his kingdom principles. Then to run the race set out before you with tenacity. Never, never give up and you will receive that imperishable prize!

God-tracking is running tenaciously

GOD-TRACKING IS GETTING ON AND REMAINING ON TRACK WITH GOD’S PLANS

Ephesians 1:17
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him

Subscribe to GodTracker by email
Twenty-years ago I received a revelation on the concept of knowing God’s purposes for my life. In previous GodTrackers I’ve shared how God seemingly had opened an important door for me, only for him to firmly shut it again. When I asked why, he simply said, “You’re on track with my plans.” You see, the Bible says, “’I know the plans I have for you,’ says the LORD.” That day I discovered that it is God who knows the plans he has for me, but I don’t; not until he reveals them to me, that is. He calls me only to daily seek and track his plans. Hence the concept of God-tracking. And his plans are always for a hopeful future. Since that day I have never been abandoned by the Lord I seek, even through the most gruelling of circumstances.

You may read this, wishing that you could discover God’s plans for your life, too. Discovering God’s plans requires two things: 1) Acknowledge the Lord and 2) Acknowledge the Lord.

Firstly, have you acknowledged Christ as Lord of your life? Have you come to a point where you realise that God is good and you’re not? Yes, you are not good enough for God! Neither am I! All mankind has sinned and missed God’s goodness; none of us is good enough for God. Only God can be good enough for God. That’s why God sent his only Son, Jesus Christ into the world. The good God became like one of us, through Jesus. Jesus was born of a virgin; therefore, he is sinless. The result of sin is death and Jesus died. But because he was sinless, he did not remain dead but rose again. While we were yet sinners, God showed his love in that Christ died for us. God made Christ who had no sin, to become sin for us so that by faith in him we could be made good by the grace of God. We all went astray from God’s goodness, but God laid on Jesus the inequity of us all. Through confession and repentance of sin and acknowledging Christ as Lord, you can be saved to discover God’s good plans for your life.

Secondly, don’t leave it there. Continue to seek and acknowledge God in every part of your life, daily. Acknowledge God in your work life, your family life and your private life. Acknowledge God in your finances, your ambitions and your desires. Acknowledge God in your successes and your failures. If you acknowledge in every part of your life, then he will make straight your paths and keep you on track with his plans.

“Dear God, I deeply desire to know your plans for my life. I admit that I have been far from you. I confess and repent of my sins and shortfalls. I believe that Jesus, the sinless One, died in my place and rose again to save me from the results of sin, which is death. I not only believe this truth but I now confess the reality of is for myself. I give my life to Christ and accept him as my Lord and Saviour. Dear God, I now acknowledge you in every aspect of my life. I acknowledge your presence. I acknowledge your righteousness. I acknowledge your glory.
